Metamusik was formed in 2005, after Johannes Rytzler and Daniel Berton had discussed a way in which they could make improvised electronica, which despite its origin still sounded like music and not just like random sound experiments. From different angles both had approached and been fascinated by electronic music (both the dance music as well as the experimental electronica and the so called electro-acoustic music). Previously both had a keen interest in different forms of improvisational music and had played together in various formations within the musician community Memento. After a first live gig, in combination with a subsequent evaluation, they made up guidelines for how the music would be created in the future.

The conceptual starting point for Metamusik is music as an evolving and extensible form of constant motion, a synthesis of the electronic and living, the expected and the unexpected, the composed and the improvised. Electronics and technology is not an end in itself, but contributes only to a specific sound, the feel of a musical moment, the main objective.
